GRP Composite Flat Sheet & Anti Slip Products
GRP Ballast Boards need only to be between 8 – 12mm thick due to their inherent strength, meaning they are lighter than boards made from alternative products, they are also much easier and cheaper to transport and easier and quicker to install. They can be cut or drilled on-site and will accept a variety of mechanical fixings. Additionally they have high anti-UV / Graffiti properties as standard.
GRP Ballast Boards
Smyth Composites have manufactured flat sheet solid GRP (FybaTex) panels for use in a number of applications for many years. Recently, for a multitude of reasons, these panels have more and more often been utilised as Ballast Board and Parapet Screens by the rail industry.
Benefits of Using GRP Boards
- Excellent Strength to Weight Ratios
- Require little, if any, Maintenance
- Long Life, due to the fact they won’t Corrode or Deteriorate
- Non-Conductive
- Lighter than Traditional Materials
- Easily Cut/Drilled on Site for Simple Installation
- Excellent anti-U.V. Properties to Stave off Colour Fade
- Excellent anti-Graffiti / Vandal Properties
FybaTex Panels are very versatile as they come in:
- Thicknesses from 2.5mm to 20mm thick
- Sheets cut to size up to 3000mm x 1500mm
- Any RAL / BS Colour
- Various Smooth or Textured Finishes
- Can be Supplied to BS 476 Pt7 Fire Ratings
GRP Ballast Boards are excellent for protecting rail-side equipment, retaining track-side ballast and stabilising embankments.
Boards can be supplied per-drilled, cut to shape and recessed if required.
Small orders are normally delivered in 8 – 10 working days, larger orders 3 – 4 weeks.

Panel Size and Thickness
Panels are generally manufactured to a width of 1400mm to 1500mm and a maximum drop max of 1800mm. Standard product range can be manufactured from 6mm thick upwards.

Fact:Unlike other “Plastic” glazing products GRP will not drip, melt or soften in the event of fire. For an explanation of the different ratings “click here“ |
Colour Range
Panels can be manufactured to the following:
A colour match service is also available.
Thermal Co-Efficient of Expansion:
30 x 10^(-6) /Deg C
Note: Compared with many other plastics GRP has minimal expansion and contraction characteristics and will not bow and warp in extremes of temperature.
Thermal Conductivity: 0.2w/mK
Tensile Strength: 123MPa
Flexural Strength: 193 MPa
As standard, we used chopped-strand fiberglass… Flexural Strength can be enhanced by the addition of woven reinforcement if required.
Tensile Modulus: 7.1GPa
GRP is 7 times stronger than mild steel on a weight for weight basis
